Finished Cross Stitch - Dahlia Flower

In my previous WIP posts I featured a floral cross stitch I was working on. Well now it is finished and I am pretty proud of it! I have completed several projects before, but this is the first more difficult piece I have finished. The pattern had a lot of color changes that were close together, so I had to take extra care to check and double check my pattern. Gridding my piece beforehand and working one 10 x 10 square at a time helped a lot.

For the time being I have washed, ironed, and stored this finished project away. Once I have some spare cash I will look into getting a nice frame for it. I think my dad wants to display it at the gallery he works at, but I probably won't let it stay there for more than a month. I really love this and would like to hang it in our living room.

I have already selected another pattern to work on. Keep an eye out tomorrow for my WIP Wednesday post!

More Halloween Jewelry at Sammy's Jewels

I just finished listing some more handmade resin jewelry in Sammy's Jewels for Halloween. This time I have several pieces that have real candy sprinkles embedded in them.

First up is two cross necklaces. I really like this mold because of the studded look that it has and how it adds dimension to the piece.

Next is some bat necklaces. The one with the bone sprinkles was a little bit of an experiment, but I love how it turned out. It is done in two layers. The first is a clear layer with the sprinkles, and a second layer with bright orange glitter.

Next are some bone hair clips. I have made bone clips for a long, pretty much since the time I started working with resin. They are still one of my favorites to make.

And last is some angel wing clips. I wasn't sure how a Halloween theme would look with the delicate angel wings, but I think turned out pretty unique.

All of these new pieces are available this Halloween season. They will only be available for a limited time, so be sure to order soon!

WIP Wednesday 9/10/14

My current project that I started this week is a beautiful pink flower. I picked this pattern specifically to work on two things; gridding and parking.

flower cross stitch wip

This pattern has a lot of color changes. Even though it only uses about 8 different colors, each color is only used in a small spot before it changes to another. When I saw all the color changes I knew this would be a great time to try parking. If you have never heard of it before you can easily find some tutorials. It is a little confusing to explain, and I may do an in depth post about it later, but if you are doing a pattern with lots of color changes and not too many jumps of white spaces parking may be a good idea. (Especially when it comes to Heaven and Earth Designs).

Since I already had plans on parking, I took this as a chance to practice gridding. I have done gridding before, but I used a water soluble marker and ended up hating it because if I made a mistake it could not be adjusted easily.
My dad is an avid fishermen, so when I asked if he had some 6lb red line, he went and pulled out a spool right away and let me have the whole thing. Some people grid with sewing thread, but you have to be extra careful, because if you pierce the thread it will be a pain to remove later. Fishing line cannot be pierced (well not unless you are trying really hard), and can either be removed as you work, or gently pulled out once you finish.

This piece is good for me because it allowed me to try two new things, while still making a beautiful flower. It is coming along nicely, and I cannot wait to see it finished.

Jo Anns Cross Stitch Haul

My family was very fortunate and came across some extra money. I was gifted some of the money and given the instructions "You must spend this only at Jo Anns." Hehe that isn't too hard for me. My main goal was to grab some cross stitch magazines, but I got some other goodies too.

I ended up grabbing all of the magazines they currently had, except for the Halloween one since I already have it. I am a sucker for the ones from the UK like cross stitch crazy because of the free gifts. They can be a little pricey, but I think the gifts and all the cute patterns makes up for it.

I have been eyeing up that Dragons & Unicorns cross stitch pattern book for a while now. I have always absolutely loved dragons since I was a child. Most of the patterns are a little bit above my skill level, but they give me something to look forward to. I also have my freebies from my cross stitch mags. From the various ones I got a fairy pattern, a mini fairy kit, a kit to make 8 gift tags(will be great for Christmas), and a pattern magnifier. I also grabbed 3 packs of size 26 tapestry needles. The needles really bother my hands as soon as they start to tarnish and with traveling with my work a lot I tend to misplace and drop needles. I have heard wonderful comments about Thread Heaven from fellow stitchers, especially when it comes to metallic threads or blending filaments. I haven't tried it yet, in fact I haven't tried metallic threads at all, but when I do I think I will feel a little more confident with this.

I got a huge roll of 14 count white aida; I just couldn't fit it into the picture. I also got oatmeal colored 14 count aida. I like the vintage look and feel aida like that has. In the bargain bins Jo Anns had these adorable Lisa Frank bags. I didn't see a price tag on them, so I only grabbed 2, but they rang up for $1 and I wish I would have grabbed more. They are a little bit smaller than most reusable shopping bags I have, but I was able to fit everything I got in the 2, plus they are the perfect size for caring my current WIP with me. And last but not least, I got myself a nice chart holder. It comes with a magnetic and 3 magnets to help keep track of where you are on your pattern. Will be mighty helpful since I tend to lose my place and end up wasting time counting and recounting.

That's it for this haul. I am happy with what I got, and thankful that my family is always so kind and supportive of my crafty habits.
Next time I plan on posting several of my unopened kits I have. I manage to get older kits pretty cheap on Ebay, so I have a good stash going.
I would love to see anyone's latest haul, or current stash!

Marketing on Tumblr for Online Shops

Tumblr has been my greatest source of traffic and sales compared to any other social media website Once your blog is all set up Tumblr is easy to use to generate traffic and gain new followers.
In this post I am going to go over some of the basic necessities to set up your Tumblr shop blog, and get it noticed.

tumblr.com

1.) Pick a good theme
Do not stick with the default theme Tumblr gives you. It is not a very good looking theme, and often times spam accounts do not change their theme, so it could get you confused as a spammer. Tumblr offers a few basic themes, but I personally do not find many of them to be aesthetically pleasing. A good place to look for themes is this blog.  They even have a page of themes by type
While you want to have a theme that focuses on images, I do not suggest grid type themes. They can be clunky, load slowly, and often do not share the text under a post. Most themes come with instructions of how to install it on your blog. After it is installed you can edit it to your pleasing by changing the background, images, and even the links.

2.) Sharing posts
Now that your theme is set up and pretty (you can always go back and edit it later) you are going to want to share some posts! Tumblr allows you to share 7 different types of posts; text, photo, quote, link, chat, audio, and video. I personally find myself using text, photo, and link posts most often.
With photo posts you can share up to 10 images per post. You can also arrange these images before posting them. If you are posting an image of your product be sure to provide links to where potential customers can buy them!
adding a source to a tumblr post
The first place you can include a link is clicking the gear icon on the top of the post.

adding a click through link on a tumblr post

The next place to add a link is in the caption area. After adding your caption highlight the text and click on the icon that looks like a sideways infinity symbol.

3.) Using tags
Tags are one of the most important and easiest ways to get your post noticed. Do not go tag crazy, though, only the first 4 or 5 tags will actually make those posts visible in their respective tags.
When choosing tags consider questions like:
What is it?
What is it made off?
Does it fit into a certain fashion style/motif?
Where is it being sold?
Colors?

Here are some example tags I would use for my egg hair clips
adding tags to a tumblr post
After that click the blue "post" button and congrats! You just shared your first post on Tumblr.

4.) Using the queue to your advantage
You do not want to spam your followers with your posts all at once, this is where setting up a queue becomes helpful.
queue a tumblr post
After you are satisfied with your with your new post click the arrow in the blue box and select "Add to queue". After that click on the blue button and the post is queued.
After that you will need to set up your queue to post. You can select how frequently you want the queue to post and between what times.
checking your tumblr queue

Simply select queue from the side bar

editing your tumblr queue

And then on the top of the new page it will let your change the settings.
A big advantage of using the queue is that you can keep your blog active without having to check in with it every day. People like to follow active blogs and will often unfollow blogs that have not posted in a while, so be sure to always keep a post or two in your queue.
Even if you do not have a new post related to your shop to share, consider rebloging other items. I share images of bunnies. It keeps your blog fresh and keeps it from looking like an advertising billboard.

5.) Encourage your fans to follow your new blog
Share your new Tumblr on your Facebook fan page, twitter, your webpage, on your shop, wherever it is appropriate.
Tumblr works through reblogging. So if a follower reblogs your post, all their followers will see the post. This continuous sharing can be a quick way to direct traffic to you and your shop.
6.) Consider looking to sponsor a few bloggers
Sponsoring is when you send items to another blogger an in return they review and take pictures of them wearing/using the item. This is completely optional and not a requirement. I personally used to send items to other bloggers and models, but I do not do it often anymore unless I need a specific item modeled. I feel that I have enough traffic coming to my blog from my own posts and attention I get from sharing my posts on my personal blog.
You can either search for bloggers to sponsor yourself, or you may receive messages from people who wish to work with you on a review. When you meet a blogger you may want to sponsor you are going to want to gain some more information:
How many followers do they have(it is best to look for blogs with 5,000 or more followers)?
Have they done any other reviews before?
If they have done reviews before, how well are they written?
What is the quality of their photos?
Unfortunately there are some bloggers out there who take advantage of shops looking for reviewers to get free items. That is why it is important to check their credentials before sending them the items. If you are unsure or the person seems 'fishy' do not be afraid to turn them down.
Communication with the reviewer is important. Let them know when you are sending the items and provide them with a tracking number. You should also let them know to message you when the review is up, or even schedule when you would like the review ready. If you are worried that the reviewer is taking too long you can always message them and ask about their progress on their review.

types of tumblr posts

I hope you learned something new about using Tumblr to market your shop! There is more out there that you can do on Tumblr, but hopefully this post gave you a jump start into setting up your blog.

New Cross Stitch Brooch Pins

Over my summer break I picked up a new craft, cross stitching. When I was on vacation I stopped at a book store and when looking through the crafting magazines I found one for cross stitching. The patterns pictured on the front were so cute, I couldn't resist wanting to buy them. Before then I don't even think I have heard of cross stitch. My mother, who has done embroidery since she was a child, told me it was not that hard, but it takes a lot of patience.
I quickly caught on, and now with a few months of practice I have started making pins to sell in my Etsy shop.

These pins are stitched on white plastic canvas, then a white felt backing is added to help protect the back of the stitches, and it also gives an area for the pin to attach to.

Here are some close ups of each pin.

I have some fall themed patterns that I plan on trying soon. When I list them in my shop, I will be sure to share them here. All pins can be bought from my Etsy shop, Sammy's Jewels

There are all kinds of accessories! Hair clips, necklaces, rings, earrings, and more coming soon. I focused mostly on orange this round, but I will be doing even more colors next time.
